War Ends in Europe
After D-day the Allied forces began pushing the Axis back and forced them to go on the defensive. On December 16, 1944 Germany attempted a desperate counter-attack in the Battle of Bulge in an effort to get back into the war however they were unsuccessful in winning the battle. After that the Soviet Union and American forces continued pushing forward until Germany was made to surrender in April 29.
War Continues in the Pacific
After German surrender in the war Japan remained in the war. In late 1944 American forces began liberating the Philippines and began air attacks on Japan. In early 1945 Japan managed to give the U.S two heavy losses on the invasions of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Knowing that invading Japan would cost them many lives the US decided to drop an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Three days later they dropped another one on the city of Nagasaki. As a result Japan decided to surrender on August 14, 1945.
